Big day for Sydney BJJ, or was it? Perhaps it was the no-gi that threw girls off, but several competitors pulling out on the day and divisions of 1 person made for a disappointing day. With girls like blue belt World Pro reps Cara Johnson and Jess Tolhurst travelling from the Gold Coast only not to get a fight, it doesn't bode well for female participation in NSW.
On the upside, my good friend Georgette walked away with 2 gold medals from her first competition! Also, VT-1 (Gracie Humaita) competitor Alex Chambers announced her promotion to purple belt, while her student Elisa Chan fought incredibly well after the sad passing of her brother.
If you would like to help Elisa honour her brother, you can donate to her efforts

Hi Laura, yes I had to pull out of the blue belt divisions that day! I had a fire at home but luckily woke up in time before it was too late.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately there were no other blue belt girls competing that day, there's quite a few in Sydney now too isn't there.
When will you be back competing?
Keep up the great work with the blog.
Kirsty
We missed you Kirsty! Sorry to hear about the fire, you're lucky to have woken up in time.
ReplyDeleteThere are a few blue belt girls in Sydney now, I hope that we'll get more chances to train and compete together as the women's side of the sport develops.
