With world champions Robert and Sophia Drysdale in town for a couple of days, how could you not take the opportunity to learn a few moves? Robert took a 2 hour gi seminar on Saturday morning at Gracie Oceania which was well received by students, and Sophia spent time with our women's team on the Sunday morning teaching some of the finer points that has made her a leading competitor in BJJ.
The visit was also an insight for me - this husband and wife team have built successful careers in BJJ not only as competitors, but as coaches, school-owners and travelling martial artists! I was honoured that they took time out from their hectic schedule down-under to speak to me (see
Sophia's interview) and visit our Academy.
Spending time watching and learning from Sophia, I was inspired by her professionalism and assertiveness on the mat. Her style is dynamic and fluid - having been described as 'dancing on the mat' - with a distinct focus on using her body positioning to get the most leverage out of her small frame. She is extremely dexterous and clear in presenting her concepts to a group.
Robert went through more advanced techniques (to the delight of the seminar group), fielded questions on the finer points of competition rules, advanced guard positions and even had a roll with the students.
