The devil is in the detail

If you train jiu jitsu I don't have to tell you - you already know that detail is key. I just thought I'd share some thoughts after teaching a class at Sweatbox this morning.

Armed with the best lesson plan ever, I rocked up to find that most of the students had decided to stay in bed this rainy Saturday morning. Not to worry, blue belts Jesse and American-via-South Australia visitor Joel were eager to have a crack at my guard passing secrets instead!

In the hour we covered one guard open and one guard pass - not (just) because I rambled - but because there really is that much detail in a pass. Between the key concepts that I wanted to communicate about the pass, and the questions the guys asked about the way they had experienced the position, the hour flew by.

Needless to say, I myself learned heapss from spending time with these guys, watching them try out the move, and working through points where they've had difficulty.

Afterwards, we had a chat about being blue belts, about learning and refining techniques and teaching. Jesse commented "Even though I'm a blue belt, I learned a lot of detail about that pass. I've only got a sweep - one sweep!"

That's the point of being a blue belt isn't it? The way I see it, we're on our way to developing a well-rounded game, but most of us for now have one or two areas/positions/moves we excel in. My technical knowledge of Jesse's sweep is probably about the same as his technical knowledge of my guard pass - training together is just going to make both parts of our games stronger.

I'm looking forward to teaching more, training more and learning Jesse's sweep secrets :-)

Too much to remember! Jesse films the pass to help review the details later on
