Having trained in several gyms throughout Europe and Australia, Carmen is one of the most experienced females in BJJ in Australia at the moment. We are very fortunate to have her at the First Australian Female Only BJJ Day Camp where she'll be taking the gi seminar.
Here's what Carmen had to say about the upcoming camp:
So Carmen, you're set to headline this Female Only Day Camp along with Fiona Muxlow, what do you think the fuss is all about?
Well, I think this being the first event of it's kind here in Oz is an awesome opportunity to create a platform to promote this sport to more women and bringing the once already training together to share their experiences. The numbers of women involved in BJJ is still fairly small, so an event like this hopefully can change that. Fiona has been in the game even since before I started and she is a very experienced and succesful competitor. To have her on board heading the womens camp and sharing her knowledge is extremly valuable and a great motivation for everyone else!
You've trained a bit around the world, how do the girls in Australia stack up?
Yep, I've been around the block a bit :-) The Aussie girls are definately a force to be reckoned with ;-)
Can you tell us a bit about yourself, your training background, comp experience and goals?
Before I completely converted to BJJ in 2001 I did Wing Chun for approx 5 years. I've competed pretty consistently from 2003 to 2007, trained with loads of different people and made some amazing friend along the way. A big Thanks to all of you!
2008/09 I spend a lot of time teaching and learning about BJJ from a different perspective. 2010 I moved back to Oz, this time QLD, and trained with P.U.M.M.A. and the Daniel Lima team. Great training up there!!
After quite a break from comps I started back (slowly) last year with the biggest one being the PanPac's last November. I was happy to see a lot of new faces at the comps (and some "old" ones...of course). The numbers of girls competing is definately growing...slowly but surely :-D My goals? Train, get better and train and....uhh get better...and finish my studies.
Can you give us a bit of an idea what to expect from your seminar at the Day Camp?
Yes, the seminar. tz,tz,tz I would like to touch on some of the basic principles of BJJ, focusing on the perspective of a "smaller" person. I think basics are ever so important and with a lot of "fancy" stuff popping up everywhere (not that I don't like it...no, no I do) the focus on the simple basics, the details often get left behind. Don't worry, there will be some interesting stuff too ;-).If time allows I'd like to roll some and have time for Q&A's.
