Walking into the academy, I was greeted by the sounds of the Dias' Muzenza Capoeira Group doing their thing. A quick change for me, and it was onto class with some technical details from the young brown belt (seriously, this guy is a kid - sorry Will - and teaches jiu jitsu like he's been doing it for 20 years - cool).
His father - Paulo 'Goioerê' Dias finished up teaching the Capoeira class, got changed, and started coaching the guys traning no gi for the competition this weekend. After technique, we did some specific training and then free rolling for the rest of the night. Goioerê took some time to introduce me to the class, which I thought was nice, and even said a few words about my fights at last year's Pan Pacs.
These guys are seriously no-frills - no fancy mats or flashy reception desks here. The brick gym is old-school in the awesome garage/old boxing gym kind of way, and everyone trains hard. Easy to see why they are enjoying competition success despite their relative isolation from the rest of Australia's BJJ scene. Thanks for letting me visit guys!

20 year old BJJ Brown belt, AMAZING! Great write up Laura!
ReplyDeleteThanks Darran. A 20 year old BJJ brown belt that just beat some of Australia's best black belts in his weight class at Abu Dhabi Trials. Crazy.
ReplyDeleteunreal! WD beat our Brown Belt Priscus Fogognolo at the aus cup a couple years ago and again at the 2010 pan pacs. All us here in Tas love watching him roll!
